Looking to Increase Your Used Truck’s Lifespan? Try the Following Tricks!

January 17th, 2022 by

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve recently bought a used truck.

Ideally, you researched beforehand and went for a reliable model. Likewise, you probably checked its vehicle history and went for one in the best conditions. You should already have a great truck in your hands.

But that’s only a small part of being a truck owner. Now comes the time to take good care of it. Here are some tricks that can help!

Install a New Cooling System Right Away

Your top priority should always be to take care of the engine. Replacing the entire unit will cost more than the truck itself most of the time. Luckily, you just have to replace the cooling system to ensure it lasts a while.

Picture this, both the cooling system and the engine are two sides of the same coin. As long as the former is working as intended, then you shouldn’t have to worry about the latter’s current state for the most part.

Unfortunately, the pieces that make up the cooling system tend to wear down faster than the engine. So it’s likely that yours is already past its prime. With enough luck, the damage did not extend to the engine itself.

Replacing the cooling system is always way cheaper than replacing the entire engine. In doing this, you will be giving your truck a few extra years of use.

Change Oil Whenever It’s Needed

Yet another way of ensuring that your engine is in ideal shape, you should keep it lubricated at all times. That involves making sure that your engine has the necessary amounts of oil, changing it every time it gets dirty, and ensuring that the engine has the right environment for the oil. This sounds like common sense, but you’d be surprised at the number of people who tend to “forget” to change the engine oil.

You should be checking your oil every 3,000 – 5,000 miles drive for reference. Likewise, you should only add a quart of clean oil in between changes. That way, you can retain the quality of your engine for longer amounts of time.

Make Sure to ‘Bleed Your Brakes’ From Time to Time

Over time, your car brakes start to generate trapped air on their inside, which, in turn, allows them to humidify and start corroding. We assume it’s obvious why you do not want that to happen.

Luckily, you can avoid this by getting rid of this air before it causes significant damage. This process is known as ‘bleeding your brakes’. However, it can be a tad difficult to carry out on your own, so it could be a great idea to let your local mechanic carry it out.

Our recommendation? Make an appointment every year. This way, you’ll ensure that several key aspects of your car are kept in their prime condition as much as possible.
